I want to be a professional gamer, but my parents won’t support me.

Professional Gaming might look easy, but many pro gamers experience problems along the way.  Sometimes the biggest problem is convincing your parents that Professional Gaming is a legitimate way to earn money.

Your Parents don’t understand the professional gaming industry.

It’s no secret that many young people aspire to be professional gamers. After all, what could be more fun than getting paid to play video games? However, the path to becoming a professional gamer is not always an easy one. Often, parents can be sceptical of their child’s ability to make a living playing video games.

There are a few reasons why parents might not be immediately supportive of their child’s gaming aspirations. First and foremost, they may not understand the gaming industry and how professional gamers can earn a living. Second, they may worry that their child will become isolated and socially withdrawn if they spend too much time playing video games. And third, they may simply not want their child to give up on other potential career paths.

Fortunately, there are a few things that gamers can do to convince their parents that professional gaming is a viable career option.

First, it’s important to educate them about the gaming industry and how much money professional gamers can earn. Second, gamers can reassure their parents that they will maintain social connections and lead balanced lives outside gaming.

And finally, gamers can show their parents that they are dedicated and passionate about gaming by striving to improve their skills and compete at high levels.

So what are our top tips for convincing your parents you have a legit business?

For some, this conversation may be easier than imagined.  The first this to consider is if your parents actually have a problem with you becoming a professional gamer, or do you just think they have a problem?

For others, this might be a really difficult topic to discuss. Your parents may not understand the appeal, or they may be worried about the time commitment and investment required. But with a little patience and understanding, you can make them see that this is something you’re passionate about and that there’s potential for success.

Here are our top tips:

1. Talk to them about why you want to be a professional gamer. Explain your passion for the hobby and how it’s more than just playing games. Show them that you’re dedicated to improving and becoming the best that you can be.

2. Help them understand the gaming industry. There’s a lot of misinformation about gaming, so it’s important to educate them on the facts. Let them know that professional gaming is a real, competitive industry with serious prize money at stake.

3. Do your research into what it takes to become a successful professional gamer and share that with your parents.  Tell them that you understand that generating an income means you will be a business owner and, therefore, you know you will need external support and advice.

Advice From Professional Gamers

It can be difficult to convince your parents to support your decision to become a professional gamer. They may not understand the gaming industry or how you can make living playing video games.   Professional gaming sounds as difficult to achieve as becoming a professional footballer.

However, there are a few things you can do to increase the chances of getting their support.

First, educate them about the gaming industry. Explain how professional gamers earn a living and the types of tournaments and events. Show them that there is a viable path to becoming a professional gamer.

Second, try to get along with the family. If your parents see that you’re getting along with siblings and doing well in school, they’re more likely to be supportive of your gaming activities.

Third, be respectful of their wishes. If they don’t want you gaming for long periods or spending too much money on gaming equipment, try to respect their wishes. You can still pursue your dream of becoming a professional gamer while respecting your parents’ wishes.

With a little effort and understanding, you can convince your parents to support your decision to become a professional gamer.

Advice from parents

It is no secret that the life of a professional gamer can be a bit nontraditional. And while most gamers have the full support of their parents, some do not. So, how do you convince your parents to support your decision to become a professional gamer? Here are a few tips:

1. Finish your study

Your parents only want the best for you.  By completing taking your education seriously, you will demonstrate that you have what it takes to run a business and, most importantly, make good choices when it comes to managing the business finances.

2. Contribute to the household

Let’s face it, gamers have a habit of getting consumed in their games and not leaving a room for hours at a time.  To your parents, all they see is you becoming a recluse and not being a part of ‘normal life’.

If you make sure that you prioritise doing the chores you are set or just being an active member of the family i.e. eating dinner with them or occasionally watching TV (without complaining), they will be far more convinced that you are healthy if they see you more.

3. Get a part-time job

If your gaming career isn’t generating as much income as you need, why not get a part-time job to plug the gap?  This won’t take up too much of your time, but it will help you demonstrate how responsible you are

Here’s your recap

If you want to convince your parents to support you in becoming a professional gamer, it is important that you sit down with them and have an honest discussion about your goals and what you are willing to do to achieve them.

Be respectful of their wishes but also be firm in your convictions.

A little bit of give-and-take on both sides will go a long way toward reaching a compromise that everyone can live with.

We hope this helps.
